🌾 Patience and renewal amidst the Aral sands – impressions by Japanese student Yume Yuhara During the 2024–2025 academic year, Yume Yuhara from Tohoku University participated in the "Academic Mobility" program and spent a year at the Institute of Agriculture and Agrotechnologies of Karakalpakstan, studying “Agrochemistry and Soil Science.” This academic journey was not only about scholarly research but a meeting of cultures and a silent dialogue with nature. 🌿 Life amid the desert – spirit of scientific devotion Yume took part in field practice on the dried basin of the Aral Sea, working on planting saksaul, growing halophytes, and rehabilitating saline soils. Under the scorching sun, seeing seedlings struggling to survive in cracked earth—tended with care—became a moment where "life revealed its essence." 🧪 Research and transformation She studied plant tolerance to soil salinity, conducted field measurements, and performed in-depth agrochemical analyses. In her view, the Aral region could become a global laboratory for ecological restoration. She notes: “I witnessed the patience of plants, the resilience of nature, and the strength of the human spirit. Every saksaul sapling is a solitary flag of hope.” 🌍 Karakalpakstan – a land that captured her heart For Yume, Karakalpakstan became not only a place of study but a land of warmth and soul. She was touched by the hospitality, the beauty of Uzbek and Karakalpak languages, the traditions of Navruz, and local cuisine. “Karakalpakstan is a land where hearts bloom in the desert. Here, I learned not only to study but to truly live.” 🎓 Looking ahead – science, patience, collaboration Yume plans to share her Aral region experience in Japan through lectures, scientific articles, and international seminars. She aims to continue scientific collaboration and apply ecological lessons to Japan’s environmental challenges. ✨ Conclusion Yume Yuhara’s scientific journey in Karakalpakstan stands as a bridge between cultures, filled with respect for nature and knowledge. It symbolizes patience and renewal—like a saksaul tree sprouting in the desert sands.
